Graduates are those people whose degrees, diplomas or certificates have been approved by their respective school, colleges or their institutions. So there is a considerable amount of respect whenever you address someone as a graduate or a degree holder. Hence the graduates must be dressed in proper graduation attire approved by their respective university. Due to the huge importance academic regalia have, one should be able to maintain the attire and dignity. Besides, one must also have enough knowledge of how to carry oneself. High school graduation caps and gowns: These are together called as academic regalia. Every university defines certain standards for their academic dressing and hence is unique. Different kinds of degrees are represented by different kinds of academic dress. The following guide will let you know which academic dress should be worn for which degree.
a) Bachelor’s Degree: Black is the color for bachelor’s graduates. They usually wear a black gown with a black cap or mortarboard. The hood of the gown is a shell of black clothe lined with blue. The hood is trimmed with a twisted gold and blue cord. However, specific degrees are distinguished by the color of braid on the lining.
b) Master’s Degree: Like the bachelor’s graduates, master’s graduates too wear a black gown teamed with a black cap or mortarboard. All master’s degree hoods are a shell of black, lined with blue. A master’s degree graduation robe can be distinguished with the help of light blue satin border. The braid follows the colours of the undergraduate hoods.
c) Doctor of Philosophy: Since the degree of doctorate is considered as the most precious degree in the academic field, the regalia for this degree have majestic appearance too. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) graduates typically wear a royal blue gown with blue velvet facings and chevrons. It is outlined in bright gold piping. The graduates usually wear caps with bright gold tassels. The hoods of the Doctor of Philosophy graduates’ regalia are a shell of royal blue. These are lined with sapphire blue satin and a bright gold chevron. The hood generally has blue velvet trim which is outlined in colored piping that reflects the color of respective university.
This above guide is just a small idea of how the regalia are differentiated on the basis of degree of the graduate. The colors of gowns, hoods, their trims and tassels may vary as per your school or university. This is so, because every school and university pre-defines the color combination for their graduation regalia.
